What is an MOT Test?
An MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is an annual statutory inspection mandated by the UK Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). Every vehicle registered in Great Britain over three years old must pass an annual MOT test to confirm it meets strict road safety and environmental standards.
At Norton Garage, we operate an official DVSA-approved Class 4 MOT testing station located on Norton Avenue. We test passenger cars, light commercial vans, taxi vehicles, and small minibuses across Norton, Stockton-on-Tees, Billingham, and Thornaby.
Honest MOT Testing — Guaranteed Transparency
We pride ourselves on 100% fair testing. If your vehicle passes, you get a clean certificate. If it requires work, we explain the exact fault clearly and provide a transparent quote before taking any further action.
What Gets Inspected During a Class 4 MOT Test?
During a 45-to-60-minute MOT inspection, our certified DVSA testers examine key safety, structural, and environmental systems:
- Lights & Electricals: Headlamp alignment, indicator flash rate, brake lights, fog lights, reflector condition, and battery security.
- Braking System: Roller brake tester efficiency check, pad/disc wear, ABS sensor function, handbrake cable tension, and hydraulic fluid leaks.
- Tyres & Wheels: Tread depth verification (minimum legal limit of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters), sidewall bulges, cracks, and wheel bearing play.
- Suspension & Steering: Shock absorber fluid leaks, spring fractures, ball joint play, power steering rack integrity, and track rod ends.
- Exhaust & Emissions: Gas analyzer test for petrol engines, smoke opacity test for diesels, DPF integrity, catalytic converter presence, and exhaust leaks.
- Bodywork & Structure: Chassis corrosion within prescribed braking/suspension zones, door latch operation, and towbar security.
- Driver View & Mirrors: Windscreen chip/crack assessment within the wiper sweep zone, wiper blade split checks, washer fluid delivery, and mirror stability.
Understanding MOT Defect Categories
Since the DVSA update to MOT categories, failures and warnings fall under three distinct flags on your VT30 failure certificate:
1. Dangerous Defect (Immediate Fail)
Direct risk to road safety or immediate environmental damage. The vehicle cannot be driven legally on public roads until repaired, even if your existing MOT certificate has days remaining.
2. Major Defect (MOT Fail)
May affect vehicle safety or put other road users at risk. Must be repaired before an MOT pass certificate (VT20) can be issued.
3. Minor Defect & Advisories
Minor: Issue identified but not severe enough to fail the test. Advisories: Items that require monitoring (such as a tyre at 2.0mm tread or slight brake pad wear) before the next annual test.
