UK Tyre Legal Regulations & Safety Limits

In the UK, the legal minimum tread depth for cars and light commercial vehicles is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre tread around the entire circumference. Driving with tyres below this limit carries a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points per tyre, as well as an automatic MOT failure.

The 3mm Safety Recommendation

Although 1.6mm is the legal minimum, stopping distances in wet weather increase dramatically below 3mm of tread. We recommend replacing tyres once they drop to 2.5mm to maintain optimal road safety.
